nah, the earthquake was in Sumatra. back frm sch early. school at SAJC has been dismissed early due to 2 rounds of tremors felt frm the Sumatra earthquake.
i just switched on the TV n CNA was making a short report of the earthquake. footages of Indonesians cud be seen panicking n some were even crying. i think their loved ones are among the casualties. the
CNA website reports a death toll of at least 82 (expected to rise).
on the other hand, when i was in school, i experienced a very stark contrast. the 1st round of tremors were at abt 12 noon. i was attending an extra half-hr GP lesson at C201 n it was alrdy ending. Colin was sleeping beside me while i was playing solitaire on my PC Phone. when the tremors came, i felt slight lateral sways but i tot to myself in unbelief, it shd be Colin's snoring tt shook the table or something, so i carried on playing. it was only until the others began to ask each other, "did u feel it? did u feel it?" then i realised Colin wasn't the culprit. n came the PA announcement to evacuate the building n assemble at the gallery. so i hadda quit my game abruptly, pack my bag n follow the rest down to the track.
the stark contrast came when i saw the faces of everyone arnd me. no one had a panicked look. everyone was not only calm, but smiles were all over their faces, esp the students, who got very excited over the opportunity to skip lessons. i was rather upset at the bad timing of the tremors; they had to come at a time when i wasn't having any lessons n when i was gonna have a 2-hr break! anyway we were sent back to our classes aft abt 10 mins of assembling at the track. disappointed, i made my way to the study tables outside staff room to complete my Econs work (
thks Nicholas).
i had managed to complete it 30 mins b4 my Econs tutorial lesson at 2pm so i started to play solitaire on my PC Phone again. but this time, i was clever; as i felt the lateral sways for the 2nd time, i finished my game 1st b4 packing everything else n making my way to the track. again, smiles cud be seen on all the faces tt walked past me, except tt this time they were wider as they were
stretched frm eye to eye. i was oso happy cos this time the timing of the tremors was perfect; my Econs lesson was supp to start in 10 mins' time.
as i was making my way towards the track, guess who i saw. CNA reporter, S. Ramesh! woh. this time they even got the news peeps here. wat a sight. as we assembled again, a class was gathering tgt n their teacher took a photo for them. can u believe it? i was telling my friends tt judging frm this experience,
even if there was gonna be a bomb in SAJC, u'd still see students smiling n taking photos of the historic moment. tt is the culture of the Saints, or wud u say S'poreans? or am i exaggerating n being insensitive?
as time passed by, some classes started to feel restless having to stand on the field n wait for instructions, so they started to sit down in grps all over the place. my class followed suit n sat down on the track at the other end. wat a nice class outing.
we realised it was the 1st class outing when the whole class was present. cool shite.
we were gonna play Polar Bear when Mrs Lim interrupted us, saying something like this, "our safety is paramount, so i hereby announce tt school is officially dismissed." as soon as she said the word "dismissed", i cud see everyone respond w/ a spontaneous roar all arnd the field, including myself. pity there wasn't a Kallang wave, or rather a Potong Pasir wave. i didn't hear Mrs Lim clearly but Glen Teoh told me she mentioned something like CNA was filming n it was wrong to dismiss us w/ all of us smiling. lol.
woh, this time i wasn't merely happy, i was exhilarated. tt not only meant Econs lesson was cancelled but oso GP which was supp to be aft Econs, n we were supp to write an essay during GP. of cos the bad thing is there'll be makeup lessons some other day, but who cares, all of us @ SAJC get an early day off, n come on,
our safety is paramount.
i dunno if the dismissal's really gonna ensure everyone's safety, cos even tho we had to evacuate the school, my home is just 3.5 stone throws away frm school (i actually went n estimate it frm my window), n i ain't sure whether staying here at home now wud be safe onot. even as i'm typing these words now, i'm ever ready to react to an emergency: grab hold of my Pocket PC n finish a game of solitaire while i dash outdoors b4 everything else collapses.
grreat skilll.
